Server license management is no less than the ‘elite’ function of the software asset management process. Not only because there are numerous and unusual license models and metrics but also because of the diverse character of these types of installations. Every server that has an installed server application can have a wide variety of parameters and connections individually configured to meet the respective needs of the system. This often makes querying different data sources necessary in order to calculate licenses in server license management.
Due to the large degree of individuality for server license management, solutions with a large degree of flexibility and adaptive capability are necessary. Miss Marple fulfills these preconditions and is thus able to depict the most individual installations flexibly and automatically. When it comes to database applications, e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint, Oracle, reading directly from tables is often necessary in order to be able to allocate the correct license models. At the same time, all users and groups have to be synchronized with the active directory to find out the exact number of database users.
The respective license models are automatically calculated from the acquired data and integrated in the compliance calculation as a part of license management. Whether Microsoft license models, such as SPLA, CAL, per processor etc., or Oracle metrics such as Named User Plus, Per Processor etc are used, it is possible to map the most diverse range of models using the server license management.
In an audit of the respective licenses, an exact depiction of licenses is imperative. Every producer has individual requirements as to the evaluations to be created, which in many cases are dependent on the individual contractual agreements. A historical presentation is additionally required for SPLA license reporting, which is sent to the producer at agreed intervals (usually monthly) in the form of a license report. This data is automatically created by Miss Marple and can be sent directly to the producer upon approval, where necessary.
